Women who Change Last Name Earn Less

Women Earn Less by Changing Last Name or Having Two Last Names

Women who change their surname after marriage into that of their husbands, are seen as less ambitious by potential employers. This will make them less likely to be employed and they will also have a lower income. That's what shows a recent study.

During the study the subjects had to create an image along various women's names. When told that the woman had taken over her husband's name this was seen as stupid, less ambitious, more traditional. As a result, these women are less likely to find employment or to earn more. Women who opted for a double surname also had to deal with these prejudices.
