Everybody Eats 500gr Insects Per Year

500 gram Insects are eaten on average per person per year

Annually, we eat about 500 grams of insects without knowing it.

That says Marcel Dicke, insect expert at the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands. That's because many foods contain insects although not stated on the packaging. "It simply says that there animal proteins in it. In 100 grams of peanut butter you find an average of 30 sections of insects, 60 in chocolate."

To create colors insects are also used. E120 red contains for instance ground mealybugs.

The European Federal Food Agency realizes fully that insects are used in food. "Is there perhaps something wrong with that?" they reply.

Professor Dicke believes that everyone eventually will have to eat insects. The global meat production will never be large enough to ensure everyone with their animal protein needs. In the Netherlands this year insect snacks are expected in the shops.
